…a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that — for reasons that aren’t entirely clear — abstaining from alcohol does tend to increase one’s risk of dying, even when you exclude former problem drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers’ mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.
Someone should come up with a similar list for homeless people and the Street Sheet in San Francisco. I applaud the concept but that publication is a worthless piece of crap and is a lame cover for what is essentially just another form of panhandling.
I went by the John Varvatos store in Union Square tonight to see if they had a pair of boots I want to get. The back door on Maiden Lane was locked so I walked around to the front of the store.
As I started to walk in a woman with a clipboard walked over to me smiling (I now realize it was Joyce Varvatos). I stopped and asked if the store was having a private event and she said that it was so I thanked her and said that I’d come back later in the week.
She kept smiling and asked if I wanted to come in. I said, “Sure.”
She asked if I wanted to meet John Varvatos. I thought she was kidding so I replied, “Oh sure! Why not?”
She asked what my name was and I told her. She said, “Follow me, Wyatt" and walked me right over to John and said, "John? This is Wyatt Hunter. Wyatt? This is John Varvatos.”
I just grinned like an idiot and said, “I love your boots!”
