Apparent road-rage incident leads to fatal crash

This is perfect nominee for a Darwin Award. Thankfully he only killed himself and no one else. What an idiot.

Three lanes of westbound I-80 were closed for more than two hours after the driver of a 1989 Ford Aerostar minivan clipped a pickup in the carpool lane west of Carlson Boulevard around 5:45 a.m., the CHP said. The minivan then crashed into the center divide and flipped a number of times, sending debris across the freeway.

The driver, who died at the scene, may have been “brake-checking” the driver of 2004 GMC pickup truck at the time of the crash, said Officer Sam Morgan, a CHP spokesman.

Brake-checking involves intentionally swerving in front of a car and slamming on the brakes, Morgan said.

The preliminary investigation shows that the minivan driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, may have misjudged the space in front of the pickup, Morgan said. The driver’s name has not been released.
